Published on February 23, 2009 under Celebrity Gossip

In an exciting night at the 2009 Oscars Britain had much to cheer about. Kate Winslet finally won the award she had dreamed of since childhood when she picked up the Best Actress award for her role in The Reader, plus Brits Simon Chinn and James Marsh picked up the Best Documentary award for Man On Wire.

But the big British winner of the night was of course Slumdog Millionaire, which picked up 8 Oscars including Best Film and Best Director for Danny Boyle. Honouring a long held promise to his children, Boyle proceeded to hop up to the stage to accept the award “in the style of Tigger from Winnie The Pooh”!

Elsewhere Wall-E won Best Animated Feature, Sean Penn beat hot favourite Mickey Rourke to the Best Actor award, Penelope Cruz picked up Best Supporting Actress and Heath Ledger won a post-humous Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his amazing portrayal of The Joker in The Dark Knight.

The awards were superbly hosted by Hugh Jackman who opened the show with a Baz Luhrmann directed song and dance act!
